We produce trees from the various fields by caring for them ourselves and working closely with landowners that raise trees as part of the Circle D Farm Sales growing family. Our grading standards are high and all trees are flagged individually for each customer according to your specifications. This assures product consistency.
We believe in digging and shipping the trees when they are dormant and in the best physical condition. Normally we begin digging March 15th in Gooding and April 1st in Bonners Ferry. Trees are generally shipped within 5 to 7 days, depending on the weather and condition of the root ball.
We prefer spring digging to fall digging because of the physiological condition of the tree. Survival and growth is generally better for spring dug trees than fall dug trees. We have established water systems in several of our fields to provide water in case you need fall dug trees. Call us for availability of fall dug trees.
We look forward to working with you closely to provide the best possible trees for your customers!
The True Cost of Replacing Low Quality Trees....
We can all do the math when a tree dies and it must be replaced. The typical measurable losses include:
- Purchase price of the original tree.
- Shipping cost, including unloading and bedding the tree in the nursery.
- Sales cost or holding cost.
- Loading and transportation fees to the site.
- Planting and irrigation setup.
- Dealing with the unhappy purchaser.
- Removal and disposal of the dead tree.
- New tree replacement costs, which includes items 1-5 again.
These costs can be measured and must be kept to a minimum. But what about the unseen costs? The unseen costs of unhealthy or dead trees include:
- Unhappy customers passing on the information by word of mouth.
- The poor looking tree is seen by all who pass by. The quality of your product can reflect on the quality of your operation and affect future sales.
To summarize, before choosing a nursery solely on the low price of their trees, you might want to consider how low mortality rates save money, create happy customers, and future sales.
A Word About Our Pines....
When we decided to grow Ponderosa and Lodgepole Pines, we researched the market extensively. What we found was that most of these trees were being dug in the wild and a 30 to 50% mortality rate was not uncommon. This was not acceptable to us.
At our Kootenai Orchards field, our Ponderosa Pines are individually fertilized and root pruned. The result is a dense, compact root system instead of a tap root or carrot type root system, which leads to greater survival and growth of our trees. The results of our Ponderosa Pines from this field have been phenomenal.
A Word About Our Shipping...
Transportation is always an important factor in providing a quality product! In recent years, expenses involved in trucking have risen dramatically. We work hard to get the most dependable trucking at the best price for you. We prefer trucking companies that have experience with nursery stock and are properly equipped with nursery tarps and newer 48' flat beds capable of hauling 46 to 48,000 pounds. This gives you the best volume for your shipping dollar.
Dependability is also paramount in shipping. Truckers that call ahead, show up on time to be loaded, and show up at your location to be unloaded on time is critical. Once the trees are on the truck, they are out of our hands and yours, and we are depending on the truck and driver. If you have a preferred, dependable company, we will be glad to use them if they can meet the loading and off loading schedule. If not, we have a list of dependable trucking companies and will provide you with shipping quotes upon request. |

"It's unwise to pay too much, but it's also unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money, that is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better."
